Benefits of a Targeted Resume

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

There are many different kinds and examples of resumes, such as the chronological resume, the functional resume, a combination resume etc. Free resume samples of each of these can be obtained from the internet.

And then there are targeted resumes, of which also free resume samples are available, however, with a targeted resume, one needs to be a little careful. This is because by definition this is a targeted resume; or one that is aimed specifically at a particular job, its specific requirements in terms of educational qualifications, personal skills and abilities and industry experience. So here, while you can take general pointers from a free resume, you have to make sure that the final draft of your resume is tailored to meet the requirements of the job and that it dovetails with the particular qualifications needed for it.

One way to make a targeted resume would be to add a brief targeted summary on top of your existing resume sample. This can feature your career highlights which are particularly apposite or pertinent to the position that you are applying for. As far as possible the summary qualifications should as closely as possible, correlate with the job advert.

Then again, you could redraft your resume sample by first reviewing the job description and then applying your own credentials to match it as far as possible. With a little effort you can make a targeted resume by tying to match your own skills, experiences and qualifications to the requirements of the job as closely as possible, so that you can appear as the perfect fit for the job.

You can do this step by step: it the job you are seeking is of supervisory position, it is most important that you include all relevant details about previous experiences you have had in a supervisory position. Similarly, when applying for an executive position, you should be able to substantiate your experiences in that level of the organisation, and how much value you were able to add to that previous position of yours.

If is important to remember that a resume can only do so much for you and beyond a point there is little that will carry forward from your resume into the actual job interview. What the resume does is it offers that all important first impression, and it is this one document that will precede you and make it possible to land that all important interview in the first place.

This is why you must make your sample resume the best that you can. This can be done by reviewing a number of free resume samples on the net, in a variety of styles including but not limited to targeted resumes, and then decide for yourself which is the correct one for you to adopt as your own resume sample. Do not blindly follow the many free resume samples that are available; rather make sure that the format or template is suitably changed and amended in a way that it addresses directly and most pertinently, the position that you seek to get.

Getting Ready for your Interview

Free Resume Samples : Getting Ready for your Interview by Josiah Walter

Once you get the call for the interview, the next thing that you have to do is prepare for it. You can never over prepare for an interview. The more prepared you are, the harder it will be to make mistakes. It is best to prepare yourself emotionally as well as intellectually for an interview. Giving a great interview is not as hard as some may think, but not as easy as others do either. Here are a few things that must be done in order to prepare for your next interview.
Remember, during an interview, you are a salesman. You are there to sell yourself to your prospective employer. You want to market yourself in the most interesting way possible. Great preparation for the interview is your best bet. A salesman that is knowledgeable, friendly and positive always gets the close.

Do Your Research It doesn't matter how much knowledge or experience you have about the position that you are trying to get in a company if you don't have a clue who the company is or what they do. It is disastrous to enter into an interview and not be able to tell your interviewer what their company is about. How else are you going to tell them why you feel that you would be a good addition to their company?

A good and less time consuming way to get to know about a company is to look up their website. You can get all of the general knowledge about them that way, including the names of key people and their job titles. You should sift through most of their pages, including the pages that show samples of their work and/or products. You can also look them up in the media files if there are any. Read the articles about them and soak in as much information as possible.

Another thing that would be nice to do is to check out the surrounding area around the company. It makes for a nice breaker during the interview. You can make a comment about a particular monument or resting place nearby.

A trickier way to get a little extra information about the company is to call them on the phone and ask general questions, without referring to yourself as a potential employee. It's a nice way to get the goods on upcoming promotions etc. Know Your Contact When called for an interview, ask to whom you will be talking to. It is nice to be able to greet your interviewer by name at the beginning of the interview without first being told who they are. It shows that you are on top of things, and have prepared before hand.

You will also want to do some research on the person that will be conducting your interview. Learn what they do for the company and try to get some samples of their work or achievements in the company.

If you know what department that you are going to work in you may want to get the names of your potential colleagues and superiors prior to the interview as well. This way you can get some information about their roles in the company and the types of work that they have done.
Mention some of the things that you learn about your potential colleagues in the interview and about how much you look forward to working with them in the future. If you can, give an example of their work so that you will appear more sincere.

Practice Your Responses It is best, if you are prone to nervousness, to practice giving your responses to the questions that may be asked of you. You should practice your wording and the tone of voice that you plan to use; Try keeping your responses as brief as possible, but with as much detail as you can.

When you are trying to work out the proper responses to the interviewer's questions, you will also want to practice the art of getting your nerves under control as well as ridding yourself of any other odd habits while talking; like expressing yourself with your hands.

Practice answering your interview questions with a friend. Get his or her opinion about your delivery and gestures. Perhaps your friend will have some nice insights for you to use during the real interview.

Dress the Part Pre-select your attire the day before your interview. You want to make sure that your clothes do not have any wrinkles or stains on them. Pick an outfit that best suits the type of job that you are applying for. If you are going to work in an office setting, you should dress conservatively. Soft earth tones are best for women. Try to avoid mini skirts and shirts that show too much skin. A nice dark suit is good for a male. Of course if you are planning to work outdoors or in an artistic environment, you can dress a little more casually. Just be certain to avoid wearing denim jeans, over sized clothing, and under sized clothing. Women should try and avoid wearing too much make-up as well. It gives the wrong impression. Even in the hotter seasons, you should not wear sandals or gym shoes to an interview. It sends an unprofessional message. The same goes for hats and other accessories.

Get Organized
Make sure that all of the things that you will need for the interview are prepared the day before. Make a checklist of the things that you will need if you have to. You should always have an extra resume handy during the interview. You should also bring with you a note pad to take notes during the interview if needed. (Only write down the important things that you think you will need to remember)If you have a business card, have one handy, it makes for easy contact later, and it also shows that you are professional and may help the employer to remember your name.

Art Of Resume Writing

Friday, December 25, 2009

You need to prepare a personalized resume depending on the requirements of the job offer. You need to match your skills with the skills that are required for the job position you are applying for. This will help the hiring manager to segregate your resume from the lot. You will be called for an interview. Half the battle is won and now you need to impress the employers in the interview.

At the onset, you have to list all the skills, qualifications, certifications that you possess. Once the list is ready, you can begin writing your resume. The main objective of your resume should be giving personal profile in an effective manner that will attract the recruiter. Find out the format that best suits your profile. You can go for a functional resume, if you want to highlights your skills. Whereas if you have good experience then you should go for a chronological resume which focus on your work history. Once you have decides the format, you can begin to draft the resume.

To get an idea of the functional and chronological resume, you can go through samples of resume that can be easily found on the internet. You can look for examples but your resume should be original and not a copy of someone's resume. A unique resume stands out in the crowd. A unique resume is a combination of right heading, exact summary of skills and qualification and good work experience that suits the job profile that you are applying for.

The art of resume writing lies in how you personalize your resume according to the needs of the situation. Formatting, font and font size play a role in drafting of resume. The resume has to look professional so using fonts like Times New Roman, Arial, and Verdana would be quite helpful. You need not show your creativity in the resume unless you come from a creative field. You can use your creativity in writing a resume by writing simple yet meaning full words and sentences that best describe your profile and personality. Keeping things as simple as possible will help you to come out with a good resume. The key for a perfect resume is it should include all the details yet it should be precise. Within a short span of time, you will get into habit of updating your resume based on your experience and qualifications and then you will master the art.

Resume writing is an art. You have to practice it until you become an expert in writing. Resume is used as a tool to market an individual in the job market. So, you need to draft the resume effectively in such a manner that the recruiters will read it and call you for an interview. To master the art, you need to understand the nuances and work on them in detail. For an art to flourish, you need to work hard. That's the most important factor when you prepare your resume. You have to be patient in the entire process of creating a resume.

Is Your Resume Presentable?

Thursday, December 24, 2009

Free Resume Samples Articles : Is Your Resume Presentable? by Jessica Holbrook

Presentation is your first impression. Much like when you meet someone for the first time and you know that they're forming their first impression of you. Of course we always hope it will be a positive one and it is the same principle with your resume. The presentation of the document is the reader's first impression. You can either delight them and encourage them to learn more or you can turn them off and make them run in the opposite direction. After completing approximately 400 resume evaluations over the past 10 days I noticed a very tragic pattern. Executives were using resume layouts and formats that were elementary for their level of expertise and experience and entry-level and professional job seekers were using resume formats from over ten years ago that use objectives and two inch margins. Shocking I know! How is it that out of 400 job seekers only two people had somewhat decent resume formats and presentation strategies? Lack of education and information is my diagnosis.

Here is the remedy folks: DO YOUR HOMEWORK! I am going to provide you a quick checklist to compare your resume to and see if it would hold up to the standards of today's job market.

1) Resumes longer than 2 pages for professionals or 3 pages for Executives will not work. How much information do you really think a recruiter can read in that initial seven second review? Certainly not three pages worth of information. 2) The first third of your resume is the most important. If you are not utilizing an introduction/profile that contains a professional branding statement, industry specific keywords, and a career summary that highlights your value proposition you will get lost in the stack of every other boring resume recruiters receive. 3) Do not use more than one font on your resume. Use the same font for the entire document. Using different fonts screams **MISTAKE**. And also that you pay absolutely no attention to the details. 4) Do not use different font sizes on your resume in another place other than your header. Using a size 12 font and size 11 font in your professional experience section will be a red flag. 5) Please, please, please do not utilize 1 inch margins. That is like waving a flag that says hello, I'm writing a college term paper versus applying for a professional position within your organization. 5) Do not use more than one type of bullet. Using different bullets throughout the resume especially in the same section (namely professional experience) just seems disorganized and tacky. Streamline your approach, be consistent not confusing. 6) Watch your page length and spacing. Again, 1.5 spacing or double spacing seems juvenile. We are not in high school we are in the corporate world and a VERY competitive job market. There are no excuses, now you know. 7) Attractive formatting is everything when you are trying to land the job of your dreams or just any job for that matter. Do your research! Don't just go to the sample resume sites out there check out professional resume writing samples from actual professional resume writing services. Compare your resume to the samples you see and then you will know right off how you measure up. If your work is significantly different then a professional's work chances are you could probably use some help. This is not an all inclusive presentation/format list and does not include advice about any issues other then resume formatting. This is just a checklist to see if you are on the right track or not. If you're not, which in my experience seems to be most of us then get help! Either get out there and research what you're doing wrong and find ways to make it right or hire someone who can. This isn't just your resume people, it's your career and your life. Jessica Holbrook is an expert resume writer, career and personal branding strategist, author, and presenter. Is Lack of Focus Dragging Your Resume Down?

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Free Resume Articles : Is Lack of Focus Dragging Your Resume Down? by Jessica Holbrook

How many of you can honestly say you know exactly what you want to be when you grow up? Maybe you already have it figured out, and maybe you are already living and working it. If you are, does your resume know that? I work with clients every day and speak to hundreds of job seekers every week that have no idea what they want to do. I ask "Well, what do you want to do?" Then I receive the blanket "I just need to feed my family" or "I just need a job - I don't care what it is." I understand the current market and economy, but folks no direction or focus for your career and job search is going to get you nowhere fast. When I look at your resume the first three seconds I'm there I need to know who you are, what you do, and why you're good at it. -I cannot find out those three things from an objective. -I cannot find that information in a generic and vague career summary. -I will not spend my time searching through an entire resume or reading all the way down to the work experience section before I can finally see what you did in your last job. Might I also add, that what you did in your last job does not necessarily tell me what you want to do in your next job. Here are some practical tips to ensure your resume has a focus. 1. Ask yourself what you want to do. When you can answer that question look at the first third of your resume and ask yourself can I tell what I want to do? If you can't, you need to make some changes. 2. Spell it out for the hiring manager. Make it BIG, BOLD, and EASY TO READ. A title and one-liner works great. You are nailing the three big questions in two sentences at the very top: who you are, what you do, and what you are good at. 3. Brand it! Make you personal brand (you know that thing you are really good at) permeate throughout your resume. SHOW the employer exactly how you've done that great thing you're known for at each and every employer. 4. Make everything in your resume revolve around the position you apply to. Generic will get you nowhere fast, a customized and focused resume shows the employer you really want the job, you're qualified, and you are focused. If you have really great expertise in more than one area THERE IS NO LAW THAT SAYS YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE RESUME. Create more than one resume and have each focused in a different area of expertise. Communicate the value you bring in each area and what you are known for and how you excel. You can either spend a little more time customizing each resume before you send off to a potential employer or you can spend more time in your job search because you're blasting out generic resumes. Personally, I'd rather show the employer that I'm interested and that I go the extra mile. Hiring managers will weed out the generic resumes and go straight for the focused resumes built around their open position. There is too much competition right now people to be skating by on a generic resume. Are you having trouble developing a focused resume? Maybe you need a second opinion or are ready to have an expert take the reigns. View resume samples from expert resume writers or submit your resume for a free resume analysis to find out if your resume lacks focus.

Is it your resume or the economy?

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Free Resume Articles : Is it your resume or the economy? by Jessica Holbrook

Most job seekers are wondering this same question - Am I not receiving calls because of the economy or is it my resume? I've read the articles, blogs, business week stories, monitored the job boards and discussed the issue with recruiters. Everyone has a different opinion and so do I. I took my daughter to the mall this weekend to buy her a new pair of shoes (hang in here with me for a few minutes and you'll see where I'm going.) Unfortunately for my daughter, she has a wide foot. Which means only select stores carry her size shoe and it only comes in select styles. She's still in children's sized shoes so this even further complicates the issue. We normally go to this same store to buy her shoes every time she needs a pair and it's the only one in my area that carries wide shoes for children. When I went to the store they were out of her size in every single style (over 30) except one. The clerk made the comment 'we don't get much stock here anymore, we're always running out.' I remembered reading and hearing that stores were reducing inventory and cutting back on shipments to try to save money. Here I was a paying customer and couldn't get what I needed. I thought to myself, hmmmm... maybe there is something to this bad economy thing. I decided I'd have to go home and just purchase new shoes online. To my dismay - no luck there either. Online stores were out... all of them. I thought to myself - WOW, I can't even buy my child shoes. It's not that I didn't have the money or wasn't willing to pay. It's that companies have gotten so cost conscious and are trying so hard to save a buck that now they don't even have the products available when a consumer is ready to buy. I really started thinking hard about the whole economy issue.. Maybe it was as bad as the media said? Then I walked into Toys R' Us. Let me tell you folks there is NOT A BAD ECONOMY. This past weekend I took my daughter to Toys R' Us and the place was so packed you could barely push a shopping cart through it! It was wall-to-wall people and mimicked black Friday. Needless to say - I WAS SHOCKED. I can't get my daughter shoes but the local Toys R' Us store is having no problems at all. You know what this tells me? If parents have the money to go out to the stores and spend money on toys for their children things aren't really as bad as they seem. So here's my opinion whether you want it or not, or whether you agree with it or not. And let me preface by saying I am not an economist - I am writing this as a careers industry expert and every day consumer. The economy is NOT as bad as they say it is. There are jobs out there - you just have to know where to look. If you're not getting calls for interviews, it is not the economy, it is your resume. Before you get offended please allow me to explain. Toys R' Us is hiring. Just kidding. Well, actually they are hiring - so if you are really hard up for a job, now the cat is out of the bag. Secondly, because of this 'oh no we're in a recession' issue, companies are cutting back trying to save a buck where they can and guess where part of that cost cutting comes from? That's right, advertising on large, expensive job boards. I had one employer ask me if I knew a way they could fill the position without posting it so they didn't have to wade through the massive amounts of applicants. Companies are cutting costs and finding ways around the influx of applications which explains why there aren't as many jobs posted on job boards. It doesn't necessarily mean there are fewer jobs; it just means employers are going about how they post them differently. Yes, I do realize there have been cut backs, layoffs, and the unemployment rate is alarmingly close to double digits (so I do know that the economy has taken a hit) all I am saying is that it isn't as bad as some fear-mongers would like you to think. So what's a job seeker to do? Discover the shortcuts! Let me tell you a great little secret, ever heard of a website called LinkUp? This should be your new number one job search tool. I found out about them a little over a week or so ago and I cannot stop raving. This job search engine is unlike any other - think Indeed.com but even better. It searches actual company websites NOT job boards and posts all the open positions it finds. Think of how many jobs never make their way to job boards because they are filled by applicants who apply online at their company website - now think of how many opportunities you are missing out on!! Go to www.linkup.com to amp up your job search right now. Another way is to start networking like crazy. Read my article on LinkedIn invitation etiquette and then start making connections. More job seekers are being placed through recommendations, word of mouth, and networking then most other means. If you're not getting interviews then compare your resume to those written by expert resume writers. Review their samples. See how yours stacks up compared to the competition. If you are way off base then submit your resume for a free analysis. Jessica Holbrook is an expert resume writer, career and personal branding strategist, author, and presenter. Free Resume Sample Articles : Benefits of a Targeted Resume by Sarika Kabra

Free Resume Sample Articles : Simple Cover Letter Examples? Secrets To Writing Winning Cover Letters For Cv's And Resumes by Jerry Pohn

How would you like to get your dream job? Sounds perfect, but too good to be true? Well it all begins with a well written cover letter. I'll show you how...

Follow these great tips on composing a winning cover letter to accompany your resume:
Believe it or not most mistakes in the covering letter are made in the address line. If mistakes are made in the address line, this will ruin your chances of even getting an interview.

Take careful note of the following three most common mistakes made in addressing your cover letter. Triple check your cover letter address line to ensure you get your foot in the door for the interview.

1) Not addressing the letter to a person. It only takes a couple of minutes to get the correct information. Call the organization and find out who is the hiring or recruiting person for the job, then address the letter directly to them.
If for some reason you cannot find out who the correct person is, do not assume that it is a good idea to start your letter with a generic greeting. Rather leave out the greeting altogether and simply begin your

2) Not spelling the name of the organization correctly.
A very common mistake, yet so easy to avoid. When your potential employer receives your letter, with the incorrect spelling of the company name, rest assured you won't be interviewed.

3) Not giving your reason for contacting the company.
When making contract with the company be specific -- give the title of the job you are applying for and how your qualifications make you the ideal candidate for the position. Keep the tone of this sentence positive and energetic to cause the employer to want to go through your resume in detail

We've all heard the sayings about how important 'first impressions' are. Your cover letter is exactly that...the first impression your potential employer has of who you are. So, don't make the mistake of messing up the first line --'the address line' -- of your chance at creating a good impression and getting the the job you want.
